The laboratory of Hildegund C.J. Ertl, MD, Professor focuses on pre-clinical development of vaccines to infectious diseases and cancer emphasizing basic immunological mechanisms that influence vaccine efficacy. Specifically the laboratory explores DNA vaccines, viral recombinant vaccines based on E1-deleted adenoviral recombinant and dendritic cell vaccines to rabies virus, human papillomavirus type 16 which is associated with cervical cancer and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1). Vaccines to cancer focus in addition to cervical cancer on the development of vaccines to glioblastoma and to tumors that share common oncoproteins such as mutated p53.

The team is composed of two senior scientists, technicians, post- and pre-doctoral fellows, part time undergraduate students and intern high school students.
