| Five decades after the first mass polio vaccinations, it is hard to imagine the terror that the disease once created. In its wake, polio left behind thousands of permanently disabled young bodies, fearful communities, and a nation desperate to do whatever it took to vanquish this cruel sickness. Jeffrey Kluger—the coauthor of the number-one New York Times bestseller that was the basis for the movie Apollo 13 —blends biography, science, and history as he recounts the story of one of the major medical triumphs of the twentieth century in SPLENDID SOLUTION: Jonas Salk and the Conquest of Polio.
