Welcome to The Wistar Institute’s sun safety site. The Wistar Institute is an international leader in biomedical research, with special expertise in cancer research and vaccine development. Wistar oversees one of the largest and most prestigious melanoma research programs in the world. 

Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, taking the life of one person every hour in the United States. Sun exposure heightens the risk of melanoma and other skin cancers.

Eighty percent of sun damage occurs before the age of 18, which is why it is especially important to protect children from the sun. A single severe sunburn during childhood can double the risk of skin cancer in adult life.
