Last month, we shared the news of the need for increased NIH funding for 2013. Dr. Steven Metzler, one of our colleagues in the research community, posted a petition on the official White House website. This petition needed 25,000 signatures by March 18 to gain White House consideration.
This petition expired around 2:00 p.m. on the 18th. At the time it expired and disappeared from the White House petitions website, the petition was getting 4 signatures per minute with only 446 remaining. We estimate it would have taken less than two hours to meet the “threshold” per the stated rules.
Many people helped with this effort, especially towards the end. It is very unfortunate.
We are committed to pursuing this goal because NIH funding is too important. The future of biomedical research is in trouble and this petition may help at a critical time.
Steve Meltzer started a new petition on 3/18/12 that already has 1,400 signatures. We urge you to sign it. Ask your friends and family to sign it too. You will make a difference. This time, we’ll make it happen!

(Yes, you’ll need to create an account to sign the petition. But don’t let that scare you off! This is important!)
