The W. W. Smith Charitable Trust announced a $1.5 million grant to endow a professorship in cancer research at The Wistar Institute. This generous endowment will support Wistar in its goal to recruit new faculty members as part of the Institute’s expansion efforts. According to Wistar’s Chief Scientific Officer, Dario Altieri, M.D., Wistar is seeking to recruit a “critical mass” of multidisciplinary researchers who can further both the Institute’s excellence in basic scientific research and the Institute’s ongoing efforts in translating discoveries into practical therapies to prevent and treat cancer.
Another tool in helping Wistar achieve this critical mass is the new Robert and Penny Fox Tower, opening in the spring of 2014. The seven-story research tower will provide additional labs, modern facilities and open lab space that will encourage cross-departmental collaborations. As Wistar grows, recruiting talented scientists is a priority, and the Trust’s commitment to this growth will have a lasting impact.
The W. W. Smith Charitable Trust is one of the few foundations supporting medical research in the greater Philadelphia region, and the innovative research taking place at Wistar has made it a Trust grant recipient for more than thirty years. Trust support for Wistar in the fields of cancer research, HIV/AIDS, and heart disease has enabled the institute to continue as a leader in biomedical research.
