The President's Society
The President’s Society is a group of individuals who understand the importance of basic biomedical research to the elimination of cancer and infectious disease as causes of human suffering and death worldwide. With their annual gifts of $1,000 or more, they support research programs that are vital to The Wistar Institute’s mission, such as pilot research projects, shared research facilities, faculty recruitment and training for the next generation of scientific leaders.
President’s Society members also enjoy a special relationship with Wistar, its staff and resources. Among the many privileges of membership are personalized research updates and invitations to special events designed to educate as well as entertain, including The President’s Award luncheon.

The President's Award
The Wistar Institute established The Wistar President’s Award in 2004 to honor an individual who advocates for the importance of biomedical research to tackle the greatest challenges in understanding, treating and preventing cancer and other infectious diseases. The award is given to a true champion –whose visionary leadership and extraordinary achievements toward improving human health have made a major impact, changing the research paradigm for cancer and infectious diseases.
Recipients have included cancer survivors, disease education advocates and community outreach partners such as veteran ABC News correspondent Sam Donaldson; General H. Norman Schwarzkopf; U.S. Senator Arlen Specter; ABC’s “Good Morning America” co-host Robin Roberts; fashion designer Carmen Marc Valvo; and Major League Baseball Commissioner Allan "Bud" Selig. Most importantly, the selected honorees fully embody the principles of Wistar’s mission: to marshal the talents of outstanding scientists through a highly-enabled culture of biomedical collaboration and innovation, in order to solve some of the world’s most challenging and important problems in the fields of cancer and immunology, and produce groundbreaking advances in world health.
Members of Wistar’s President’s Society and local leaders are invited to attend The President’s Award event. The President’s Society is comprised of annual fund donors who give $1,000 or more each year to The Wistar Institute.
