Honoring Fred Clark, D.V.M, Ph.D., Vaccine Researcher

May 4, 2012
The Wistar community has lost a respected colleague in H Fred Clark, D.V.M, Ph.D., who died this past weekend after a long illness. Fred was one of a mighty triumvirate of researchers, including Stanley Plotkin, M.D., and Paul Offit, M.D., who are chiefly responsible for the rotavirus vaccine Rotateq, which has made a tremendous difference in the health of children here in the US and around the world. Please help restore CURE funding

April 23, 2012
In his budget for fiscal year 2013, Governor Tom Corbett proposes to de-fund the CURE program created by Act 77, the Tobacco Settlement Fund legislation, in 2001. Hospitals and research institutes across the state stand to lose a combined $60 million in research funding; Wistar itself has about $1.5 million a year at stake. The proposed de-funding will have a significant impact on Wistar. Read More >

Featured Image: Mammalian Regeneration

In the process of carrying out an autoimmunity experiment, the Heber-Katz research team noted that in the MRL strain of mice, punched ear holes used for long term identification rapidly closed without any sign of scarring.

Besides lack of scarring when the ear hole closed, a blastema formed and new hair follicles and cartilage grew back, processes not generally seen in adult mammals though thought to be part of a regenerative process seen in amphibians.
