Postdoctoral Programs
Postdoctoral fellows come to The Wistar Institute to carry out research under a Principle Investigator’s mentorship after obtaining a Ph.D., M.D., or D.V.M. degree (or their equivalent). Postdoctoral fellows are typically accepted directly by the individual laboratory to which they apply with the concurrence of Wistar's Training Committee. The program available to postdoctoral fellows emphasizes research experience and takes advantage of the cooperative interaction among the participating faculty as well as the available seminar courses and speaker programs. Postdoctoral trainees present the progress of their research at least once a year at the "Research In Progress" Trainee Series. In addition, trainees actively participate in journal clubs, attend the Wistar seminar series and other seminar series presented by the University of Pennsylvania, and contribute to their own laboratory meetings and other scientific meetings. Postdoctoral trainees are also encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to meet with the weekly invited guests of the Wistar lecture series over lunch with other trainees.
Trainees with a particular interest in cancer biology also supplement their formal education by participating in an annual “Cancer Biology” course and biweekly “Topics in Cancer Biology” meetings that rotate through different areas of cancer biology.
All postdoctoral trainees are required to receive ethics training every year by completing an online Responsible Conduct of Research course in their first year at the institute, and by participating in Research Ethics Discussion Groups during alternate years.
