Russel E. Kaufman, M.D. is president emeritus of The Wistar Institute, an independent, non-profit biomedical research center in Philadelphia. In addition to his administrative leadership of Wistar, Dr. Kaufman has been an active researcher at the Institute, investigating the genetics of blood diseases and cancer.

Throughout his career, Dr. Kaufman has not only published original work on many of the genes that control blood cell development, but also maintained editorial positions for a variety of publications including the New England Journal of MedicineDuke Cancer Reports, Blood Journal and Duke Med Magazine.

Dr. Kaufman has been a pace-setter for the growing life sciences industry in the greater Philadelphia region, serving on the board of directors for the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce; Select Greater Philadelphia’s CEO Council for Growth; the Greater Philadelphia Life Sciences Congress; the University City Science Center; BioAdvance – Biotechnology Greenhouse Corporation of Southeastern Pennsylvania; The University of the Arts; and Osage Venture Partners.  He is also on the scientific advisory board for Pappas Ventures and a member of WHYY’s Health and Science Desk advisory committee.
