The tips of DNA, called telomeres, contain important genetic information found nowhere else in the genome and are important in controlling when cells divide. Harold C. Riethman, Ph.D., and colleagues are studying the DNA of telomeres to better understand disorders such as mental retardation and muscular dystrophy, and to investigate how abnormal telomeres may contribute to cancer.
