Highlights from Remarks by Stanley A. Plotkin, M.D.,
Wistar Professor Emeritus,
Chair, Wistar Institute Vaccine Center External Scientific Advisory Board
Inauguration of the Wistar Institute Vaccine Center
May 31, 2007
“When I arrived at Wistar in 1957, Hilary Koprowski’s laboratory was in full swing, attempting to develop and test better strains of oral polio vaccine. For a young researcher who had come to Wistar precisely because of an interest in vaccines, it was a fertile place. I cut my eye teeth in the polio lab…The work was exciting, productive.”
“The world of vaccine development has changed considerably in recent years. Recombinant technology to produce proteins, mutation to produce attenuation, DNA plasmids, pseudo virus particles, reverse vaccinology and vectors, to name only a few of the new strategies—these are revolutionizing the field… New candidate vaccines are pouring out, and the Wistar Vaccine Center will have much to do.”
“To persist in vaccinology, one has to have patience.”
